There were joyous scenes at The Charter School Bermondsey as Year 11 pupils returned to collect a record-breaking set of GCSE results. The fantastic results we achieved continued our trend of year-on-year improvement and were all the sweeter following another year of disruption and uncertainty caused by national lockdowns. The number of school staff and family members who joined in the celebrations were a perfect illustration of the team effort that has been key to pupils’ success.

They have grown into fantastic young people, and it gives our staff great pride to know that they can now go into the world with confidence and with a strong set of values, because they came to The Charter School Bermondsey.”

Cayla was one of several pupils who bagged top grades. She achieved 6 grade 9s and is looking forward to studying A Levels mathematics, further mathematics, and Geography at Westminster College. Her aspiration knows no limits as she wants to study mathematics at Waterloo University in Canada.

Abdul-Mateen scored 4 grade 9s and goes on to study mathematics, physics, chemistry and geography at London Academy of Excellence. “I am so proud of my journey and the destination I have reached. This is a special community for me!” Abdul-Mateen wants to study aeronautical engineering at university in the future.

There was also high drama as aspiring actor, Sophie exceeded her expectations gaining 7s where she expected 5s. Following on from her magical performance as one of Macbeth’s witches at Theatre Peckham, she is looking forward to Southwark College where she will study Business and Finance Administration.

Pupils also collected a copy of their Class of 2021 Year Book to cap an emotional morning.

“We are quickly building our alumni network and have had our first alumni events this year.  This means it’s farewell, but not goodbye for Year 11. We’ll see them again very soon to hear all about what they have been up to. They’ll always be members of The Charter School Bermondsey community.”

The Charter School Bermondsey is determined to build on the progress it has made in recent years and looks forward to continuing this work in the new year starting in September!

 

Our school community says not goodbye, but au revoir to the eldest students of The Charter School Bermondsey as we will soon see them again. Over their five years at The Charter School Bermondsey, we have enjoyed watching them grow into this fine, well-mannered, lively and often, hilariously funny group of young people. Many of our staff team remember their arrival on their first day of secondary school, back in 2016 and how quiet and nervous they (briefly) were; they are certainly ‘out of their shells’ and sharing their greatness.

 

It has been an action-packed fortnight since our return from the Easter break; I am truly impressed with how staff have gone above and beyond to provide such a range of learning opportunities, and how well pupils have engaged in these. Interviews with a leading journalist, mentoring with the Worshipful Company of Pewterers, a Year 10 work experience day, there has certainly been no shortage of opportunity!

It has been a big fortnight for our school as we welcomed the announcement that pupils will be returning to face-to-face learning, this week (beginning 8th March). We are excited to be welcoming both staff and pupils back, but for many of us, school was never closed! Read more about this and our other stories.
