Welcome to the first community bulletin of the term. It’s great to be back and seeing pupils and staff settling back into the usual routines. I’m pleased to see our new year 7 have made a smooth transition to secondary school, thanks to our fantastic summer school programme which ensured they got to know the school ahead of their September start. There were joyous scenes at The Charter School Bermondsey as Year 11 pupils returned to collect a record-breaking set of GCSE results. The fantastic results we achieved continued our trend of year-on-year improvement and were all the sweeter following another year of disruption and uncertainty caused by national lockdowns. The number of school staff and family members who joined in the celebrations were a perfect illustration of the team effort that has been key to pupils’ success.

“I am absolutely delighted with our students’ achievements, and impressed by the resilience they showed to persevere through uncertain times and many rigorous assessments to evidence just what they are capable of. They have grown into fantastic young people, and it gives our staff great pride to know that they can now go into the world with confidence and with a strong set of values, because they came to The Charter School Bermondsey.”
Marcus Huntley (Principal)

Cayla was one of several pupils who bagged top grades. She achieved 6 grade 9s and is looking forward to studying A Levels mathematics, further mathematics, and Geography at Westminster College. Her aspiration knows no limits as she wants to study mathematics at Waterloo University in Canada.

“You have looked after both my children wonderfully. Thank you to all the staff at Compass.”
Kize (Mother)

Abdul-Mateen scored 4 grade 9s and goes on to study mathematics, physics, chemistry and geography at London Academy of Excellence. “I am so proud of my journey and the destination I have reached. This is a special community for me!” Abdul-Mateen wants to study aeronautical engineering at university in the future.

There was also high drama as aspiring actor, Sophie exceeded her expectations gaining 7s where she expected 5s. Following on from her magical performance as one of Macbeth’s witches at Theatre Peckham, she is looking forward to Southwark College where she will study Business and Finance Administration.

Pupils also collected a copy of their Class of 2021 Year Book to cap an emotional morning.

“We are quickly building our alumni network and have had our first alumni events this year.  This means it’s farewell, but not goodbye for Year 11. We’ll see them again very soon to hear all about what they have been up to. They’ll always be members of The Charter School Bermondsey community.”
Marcus Huntley (Principal)

“Our students have had a very tough year, having had to study from home for much of it, and then going through such arduous and protracted assessments to evidence their learning for their teacher assessed grades.  On behalf of the governors, I congratulate our students for their achievements and for the resilience which they have shown in getting to this special day and doing so well. They have been a credit to the school and we are very proud of them.”
Martin Deutz (Chair of Governors)

The Charter School Bermondsey is determined to build on the progress it has made in recent years and looks forward to continuing this work in the new year starting in September!

Over the last two weeks there have been many exciting developments at Compass and a lot to celebrate. Students have been exploring the historical contributions to our society by members of the LGBTQ+ community and observing and inventing ways to ensure that inclusivity and equality are in the forefront of thinking and that respectful and thoughtful communication is a habit. A range of Pride activities in Learning Family Time and lessons have highlighted this ethos and I’m proud of the entire staff team and the student body for their enthusiasm and creativity in conveying this message of kindness and respect.

Our school community says not goodbye, but au revoir to the eldest students of The Charter School Bermondsey as we will soon see them again. Over their five years at The Charter School Bermondsey, we have enjoyed watching them grow into this fine, well-mannered, lively and often, hilariously funny group of young people. Many of our staff team remember their arrival on their first day of secondary school, back in 2016 and how quiet and nervous they (briefly) were; they are certainly ‘out of their shells’ and sharing their greatness.

The Charter School Bermondsey community has been in reflective mode as mental health and well-being has taken centre stage. Pupils and staff have enjoyed activities such as “Midday Mindfulness”, seed planting at Learning Family time, smoothie making by pedal power and family cooking sessions. These activities have given us all a boost and…

It has been an action-packed fortnight since our return from the Easter break; I am truly impressed with how staff have gone above and beyond to provide such a range of learning opportunities, and how well pupils have engaged in these. Interviews with a leading journalist, mentoring with the Worshipful Company of Pewterers, a Year 10 work experience day, there has certainly been no shortage of opportunity!

While The Charter School Bermondsey marked International Women’s Day celebrating the achievements and contributions of women to our world, the events surrounding the kidnap and murder of Sarah Everard and the ensuing protests have given much cause for The Charter School Bermondsey Community 22nd March reflection.

It has been a big fortnight for our school as we welcomed the announcement that pupils will be returning to face-to-face learning, this week (beginning 8th March). We are excited to be welcoming both staff and pupils back, but for many of us, school was never closed! Read more about this and our other stories.

We are delighted to be welcoming pupils back for face to face learning from 8th March. Our pupils have been fantastic in Virtual School with high levels of attendance and a 94% approval rating from parents!

However there really is no substitute for face to face learning and we can’t wait to see all pupils back on site again. Read about our plans for the phased return and ensuring staff and pupils are safe. Return to school plans.

Even with a 94% parent approval rating for our virtual school and record levels of engagement from pupils, our staff team is determined to keep improving. The Charter School Bermondsey is a community school and parents are at the core of this, but we hadn’t had an on-site parent event since September. The advent of Lockdown 3 meant that something had to be done and I had seen a local independent school run parent Zoom meetings and how other schools were using School Cloud for Parents’ Evenings.
